In 2006, approximately 18 community members volunteered to form the Citizens Riverfront Development Committee. The committee meets monthly to work with the City of Port Neches leaders to create the most spectacular aquatic splash park between El Paso and New Orleans. When completed, it will complement the Tugboat Island Playground.
Early in 2007, the design of the yet-to-be-named splash park was selected by the committee and presented to the City Council for approval. Approval by the council was received in March, 2007, to replace the hurricane-damaged city pool with the splash park. The committee continues to report to the City Council as the splash park develops. Anticipated completion date will be during the summer of 2008.
Based on projected costs of equipment and installation, it was determined that the committee needed to raise approximately $490,000 through various grants, corporate and business sponsorships, and private community donations.
The city administration will handle all donations on the committee’s behalf. This ensures the security, accuracy, and accountability of donations as well as provides donors with full charitable tax receipts. |
